The Avery Growler Deal

Hello there and thank you for your interest in our beer! We know that followers of great craft beer are always interested in filling up their growlers with the freshest beer possible and we salute that for sure. Who doesn’t love fresh beer straight from the source? The thing is, we don’t fill growlers. And we aren’t going to. Before I sound like too much of a jerk, let me explain why.

Unlike many smaller breweries or brewpubs, we have a bottling line here at our brewery that is constantly filling bottles with just about everything we produce. The only things not included in those bottlings are the things that we want confined within our walls so we can offer very special tappings to our visiting fans. Here at the Avery Tap Room we only carry the freshest batch of every beer available – in bottles as well as kegs, unless, of course it’s an aged beer. So anything we might sell in a growler is already bottled. Those bottles have been properly sanitized and are free of any wild air that would contaminate the beer. While filling a growler, not only do you lose beer due to foaming (no matter how careful anyone is), but you expose the beer to whatever is in the air around the tap or even worse whatever might be on the fill tube that is generally covered with beer and often sitting out. Growlers go bad very quickly and even before they are bad they change to flavors not intended by the brewer. So that’s the freshness/purity side of the issue.

Another issue is cost. Growlers are typically 2 Liters. That equates to 68 ounces or thereabouts. A six pack is 72 ounces of beer, individually bottled for freshness. The bottles are made of recycled glass and are recycleable, in case that is any issue. A growler of a typical 6%abv beer runs $12 most places. Our six packs run $9. They have been stored cold from filtration to bottling to the shelf. Bombers are $7-8 for higher alcohol and/or bigger flavors and they cost more because the amounts of ingredients are more. Three bombers of Hog Heaven (9.2%), Salvation (9%), or The Reverend (10%) would run you $21. That’s about what a comparable growlerfull would cost, probably a little less. If you leave a growler 1/3 full overnight the carbonation is usually about half and it tastes different the next day. With bombers you could drink two and save the other one for the next weekend.

So that’s our reasoning. We’re maintaining the intended flavor, integrity and freshness of our beer by selling it to you for less. It really is to be considerate to both parties – you and the beer.

Thanks again for your interest and please know that we don’t enjoy saying “no,” we just enjoy good beer. Just like you.

Cheers and BIG beers.
